Pochettino set for Spurs Job

The Spurs hot seat appears to have been somewhat of a poisoned chalice of late. Managers with proven track records have come up short time and time again. The likes of Juande Ramos,Harry Redknapp and Andre Villas Boas have all fallen victim to the lofty expectations of chairman Daniel Levy and found themselves out of a job.

Most recently, the axe was given to Tim Sherwood. An inexperienced manager who despite being outspoken and publicly critical of his players at times came away from his Spurs tenure with a creditable record of 12 wins from his 21 league games in charge. Since Sherwood’s departure several high profile names have been bandied about. Louis Van Gaal , Ajax’s Frank De Boer and ex Swansea manager Michael Laudrup have previously all featured heavily in the betting. However it now appears that Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino is top of the list, with Spurs expected to confirm the appointment within the coming days. So what is it that makes the Argentine a leading contender for the job?

Nigel-Adkins

Initially, his appointment as Southampton boss was greeted with great scepticism and anger from fans at the sacking of his predecessor Nigel Adkins. Since then, Pochettino has gone about his business quietly but effectively, turning the Saints from relegation threatened strugglers into a solid mid – table outfit. His high pressing, energetic approach, combined with free flowing attacking flair has been great to watch this season and will surely be welcomed by Spurs fans.

The likes of Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw and Rickie Lambert have all flourished under the guidance of the Argentine and have been rewarded with places in Roy Hodgson’s England World Cup squad. Ironically this may be one reason as to why Pochettino may see his future elsewhere. Lallana and Shaw in particular are attracting great interest from England’s top clubs and Southampton’s hand may be forced if reported bids of around 20 million are put on the table for either, if not both. It would leave gaps in his team that would be enormously difficult to fill without a substantial transfer kitty.

Pochettino-Spurs-1

It is understandable that Pochettino would be tempted to manage such a talented squad with a larger transfer budget than at Southampton; however he faces a difficult task in uniting a dressing room littered with hefty transfer fees and egos. It is a very different pressure and expectation level than those faced in his time in La Liga at Espanyol and over the past two seasons at St. Mary’s where fans and owners were more than happy with a top half finish.  Tottenham Chairman  Levy will expect a squad that he invested over 100 million pounds in last summer to be competing for a Champions League spot at least after Spurs finished a disappointing ten points behind North London rivals Arsenal in the race for fourth last season.

During his time in England though Pochettino has proven he has the credentials to mould a team into a system that is capable of competing with the top teams in the division. With greater depth and quality at Tottenham I feel if the entire squad can buy into his high energy attacking philosophy, it could make Spurs a huge force to be reckoned with next season.
